Everyone knows that humans cry when sad, when cutting onions and even sometimes when they’re extremely happy.

Crying is a response to a variety of things.

But, does crying help make your eyelashes longer?

Before you start to cry tears of joy at this news, or read it and weep, let’s take a look at some science and discover if crying causing eyelash growth is actually a thing.

First of all, it’s true that crying can be beneficial for your eyes. It can help your eyesight by providing Vitamin A, zinc and other nutrients as well as oxygen to the eyes via your tears.

But wait.

Some naturally long-lashed individuals rarely cry and some people who cry a lot don’t have long lashes, so what gives?

Tears are thought by some to be a fluid created to provide the eyeball with nutrients and this, in turn, helps with eyelash health.

There are lots of vitamins and minerals in tears, as well as fatty acids, which help the skin to self-renew.

Others think the shape of eyelashes can be influenced by your emotions.

Dr Debra Jaliman from New York, one of the top dermatologists in the country, claims that crying can make some people’s lashes longer and more curled but does the opposite in other people! In other words, this is the equivalent of someone saying : I don’t know if crying will help grow your eyelashes…. haha

But let’s dig deeper…and get to know the benefits of crying for eyelashes…. ( if you want the short answer to the question, skip this part and go directly there.)

Unless you’re dabbing your eyes at a wedding or you just won the lottery (we can all dream, right?) crying isn’t typically associated with being happy.

However, there are some benefits to crying, so it’s not always a bad thing.

Crying can help your vision and make your eyes look shinier but tearing up can also help resolve whichever emotions are making your eyes water in the first place.

It cleans your eyes and eyelashes. It releases emotions and also offers psychological and physical benefits. Crying can help improve your mood, tone down your stress levels and boost immunity.

Did you know that the body releases toxins when you cry? It also releasing neuropeptides, and this process can make your mood lighter and help you to feel better.

Natural Cleansing

Tearing up can clean the eyelashes naturally and also stimulate eyelash growth.

A good sob can help the cleansing process because the fluids in your tears will help remove any bacteria and/or debris from the eyes.

Goodbye Impurities

Not only does crying have eyelash benefits but it can also clear impurities out of the eyes.

Although some people consider crying a sign of weakness, the truth is it can be strengthening.

Having a bit of a sob can be therapeutic and it isn’t destructive like anger.

It’s true, having a good old weep can help your emotions to settle and lift your mood and it’s believed to be a healthy response to difficult-to-process emotions and help you heal.

We cry when experiencing strong feelings like sadness, frustration, disappointment, and anger.

Releasing those feelings by crying can help you heal and move on.

Also, crying can be a cue to open up about your thoughts and this can also reduce feelings of isolation.

Cryologists (yes that’s really a thing!) say that crying brings more emotional relief than anything else since it’s stress-free (and also cheaper than therapy).

Crying can reduce stress, cheer you up and can also boost creativity. ( Don’t we say that break ups are the best sources of inspiration for song writing…..)

Boo Hoo: There are Disadvantages Too

There are some downsides to letting your tears flow. ( what a surprise haha)

It’s Tiring

First of all crying can be draining. It can also dehydrate you and deplete your potassium levels as well as those of other minerals. Hearty sobbing can be a strain on your eyes, sinuses, voice box, and throat.

Can Make You Feel Sadder

Sobbing too often or too much can make you feel depressed and sad. It can be hard to stop crying sometimes, which can be inconvenient or embarrassing.

Letting some tears fall on to your pillow is one thing but bursting into tears in the middle of a job interview isn’t exactly ideal.

How Stress Hormones Affect Eyelash Growth

According to researchers, stress hormones released before or during a crying spell can affect your hair follicles and potentially increase eyelash growth, making them look thicker.

These hormones aren’t likely to result in longer lashes though.

Tears cling to your eyelashes while you weep and although some people believe the moisture can grow your eyelashes (think of it like watering a plant!) there isn’t enough evidence to back this claim up.

Although some people claim if you cry every day you might notice a slight growth spurt after a few weeks, science just doesn’t support this idea.

And unless you’re truly miserable or currently reading this while chopping onions and spilling milk in the kitchen, you probably won’t be able to cry on demand anyway. (And imagine the eye-watering cost of all that Kleenex!)

Sobbing doesn’t affect eyelash extensions, by the way, unless you dislodge them by rubbing your eyes (which is never a good idea anyway) because they’re attached to your natural lashes.

So we are sorry, but crying won’t really make your eyelashes grow longer…..Instead we recommend you to focus on more effective ways to grow them stronger.

Let’s cut to the chase, does having a good bawl result in longer lashes?

Although the tears coating your eyelashes can make them look longer while you’re in tears, this isn’t a permanent effect. So, unfortunately, crying won’t really help with your eyelashes getting longer.

In fact, if you cry a lot or for a long time and rub your eyes, this could even result in some lashes coming out.

Crying can be beneficial and having a good sob can lift your spirits and help you to feel better. However, there are better options to consider if you’re looking for a surefire way to extend those lashes.

Proven Ways to Extend Your Eyelashes

So, while crying will not really help extend your eyelashes, there are some sure methods to add that eyelash length you’re dreaming of.

Let’s take a look at what you could try:

Use an Eyelash Curler

This handy little gadget curls the lashes before you apply mascara which makes them look longer and prettier.

Choose from manual curlers ( the one we really like is here at amazon) or heated ones. They can speed up the process with heat and save you some time in curling your eyelashes. The heated curler we like at Amazon is this one. There are more expensive versions but this one does the job at a good price πŸ™‚

Use a Primer

An eyelash primer can help your eyelashes appear longer by coating them before you add mascara. Simply apply it like mascara, wait a minute for it to dry, then add a coat or two of mascara on top.

If you want to be blown away, try this one on my favorite shop amazon ( I was skeptical at first lol but boy I was wrong and this one is a real keeper πŸ™‚

Lengthening Mascaras

There are plenty of mascaras to choose from which offer lengthening benefits. It can be hard to know which to choose.

Some folks prefer to use cruelty-free mascara, either to avoid using animal-derived ingredients or because they think animal testing is wrong. We got you covered !! Fake It to Make It: What about Falsies?

Fake eyelashes can make your eyelashes look both thicker and longer. False lashes come in different shapes, sizes and even colors, so you might like to experiment to discover which kind suits you the best.

Eyelash growth serums.

To make your eyelashes grow stronger, one effective way is to use eyelash serums that will bring all the nutrients to the roots of your eyelashes and help them grow thicker and longer.

They are really effective but ( yes, there is a “but”) you need to be patient !!!!

It will take about 1-2 months to get results…. I can tell you it is worth the wait. πŸ™‚ from our testing, our current favorite one is this one on Amazon. You don’t need to spend your money on the super expensive ones, this one is really effective at a much better price. ( why spend more when you can get similar results with a lower price ? haha)

Eyelash Growth Supplements

You might have spotted eyelash supplements on the market which supposedly encourage eyelash growth. Biotin or vitamin B7 is one great supplement which helps hair and nails to grow and be healthy. ( I love this one here, for eyelashes, nails etc).

Fish oil is also popular because it gives your follicles some healthy fats. We’d recommend taking capsules though unless you especially like the taste of fish oil (not many do!) ( I am still testing so I can’t give you any recommendations for the moment…stay tuned )

Folate is a substance that occurs naturally in beans and leafy greens, so it might be worth adding more of those to your diet too. ( I love eating salads so I am covered here lol)
