How To Find The Best Growth Serum For Your Lashes

In fact, it always seems like a new serum is entering the market, promising consumers that using the product will produce cause their eyelashes to grow out fully.
However, what you’ll find is that most of them do not generate even close to those claims.
How can you distinguish what works and what doesn’t?
We did the work and tried to make it easier for you to understand 🙂
Look For The “PG” Ingredients
The quickest way to learn what eyelash growth serums are the best is to look for the “P” ingredients.
What are “PG” ingredients?
PG stands for prostaglandin ingredients like Prostaglandin I.C., Isopropyl Cloprostenate, Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide and Methylamido Dihydro Noralfaprostal (MDN). Yes, they sound complicated lol
Prostaglandins( PG) are natural substances that play major roles in our body ( immunity, circulaton etc…..)
In the past, a good number of eyelash growth products had these active ingredients, but it was at the urging of the Food and Drug Administration to remove these substances or at least to lower the dosage.
Products that used to work clearly before have become much less effective.
Why did the FDA urge the change?
Some people say it was a response by Allergan, the developers of Latisse, to get rid of the competition…..
As such, beauty product manufacturers had to reformulate their highly-effective products into less effective ones. Thus, finding the serums that work has gotten much more difficult
But you know the cosmetic industry.
Every year, the cosmetic industry will spend more money on research and development to find even better active ingredients to get the long eyelashes we all want. So even with the removal of prostaglandin analogs, we now have many interesting ingredients that can lead to results that can still get the WOW effect you are looking after….
Yes, current eyelash serums with the new ingredients really work, but not all eyelash growth serums are similar….. in fact we call eyelash serums without prostaglandins : Eyelash conditioners. in general eyelash conditioners give results a bit less dramatic than those with eyelash serums with PG.
- So, if it’s your goal to have longer and fuller lashes, you can find great eyelash conditioners that will meet this need.
- If you are looking after the dramatic results, then you will have to stick with eyelash serums with prostaglandins, though from our testing we found a few eyelash serums without PG that gave really impressive results.
Yes using prostaglandins has pros and cons. For sure you have more chance to get more dramatic results but…
Prostaglandin based serums can lead to side effects.
While prostaglandin ingredients do lead to long, thick eyelashes, not everybody can use them.
They can lead to serious side effects, which is something to be mindful of if you want those coveted eyelashes.
What are some of the side effects with eyelash growth serums that use prostaglandin ingredients in them?
- Red, itchy and dry eyes
- Darkening and redness of the eyelid. Eyelid skin color change is due to the increase in melanin in the skin. It’s not a permanent side effect and eventually fades after several weeks you quit the prostaglandin-carrying product.
- Darkening irises, which is a more permanent side effect of prostaglandin use. Women (and men) who have light-colored eyes could find themselves with a darker eye color change. This is a side effect that people must be aware of before they use any eyelash growth serum product that contains a prostaglandin ingredient.
Keep in mind that is is a permanent side effect. Even if you quit using the serum, your eyes will not go back to their original color.
If you have light-colored eyes, you should probably not use any eyelash growth serum with prostaglandin ingredients in them. While not every light-eyed color person will have this problem, is the risk worth it?
People with brown eyes can use these products, but if you don’t feel comfortable with the possibility of darker irises, an eyelash conditioner is the better option. High-quality eyelash conditioners can still produce the kind of results you want without affecting your eye color.
We did a complete review of the best eyelash conditioners on the market. Check it HERE.
If your goal is to get those coveted, most sought-after lashes, and are okay with the side effects, then you need to find an eyelash growth serum that contains prostaglandin ingredients in it because prostaglandin ingredients can really boost eyelash growth.
The key is to weigh the benefits against the drawbacks before going with an eyelash growth serum or sticking to an eyelash conditioner.
The best serums contain prostaglandin? is it that simple?
You know we like to dig deeper and the quick answer is no.
Read on to understand the complexity of the problems…..
Why?
- Having a prostaglandin analog in the formula is one thing, what also matters is the concentration of it. Let’s say just for the sake of giving an example, if you need at least 2 % of this analog in your eyelash product to get results, but they only use 0,002% of it, then the company can indicate their product has a prostaglandin analog on their packaging and ads but this is only for marketing purposes…You won’t get the expected results.
- Having a lower concentration is not a surprise though because manufacturers have to comply with some regulations. If they went over a certain threshold in percentage, then they would not be able to sell the eyelash serum without a prescription…. That is why they need to keep the prostaglandin analog below a certain limit so they can sell it as an over the counter product…..
- Prostaglandin analogs are expensive. So, the more percentage you have in your serum, the more expensive it is to manufacture….. Here again, some companies may feel tempted to lower the concentration of the prostaglandin analog to make more money….. (or worse to pretend they have incorporated a PG analog even though this is just a big fat lie… yeah scams do exist….)
- A prostaglandin analog is the active ingredient that will by far give you the best results to get longer eyelashes, provided the concentration is enough. No debate. And that comes with a price tag but the good news is that new botanical extracts and peptides have since hit the cosmetic market with great results on eyelash growth without the side effects and the cost of prostaglandin analogs. Let’s not forget also biotin which truly can help too. We were a little skeptical at first but several eyelash serums without prostaglandins PG really surprised us and gave us great results that were comparable to serums with PG analogs.
Besides the Pg analogs, what ingredients stimulate eyelash growth?
There are other ingredients that will help to spur your eyelashes to grow. These ingredients include biotin, peptides and botanical extracts.
What is each of the ingredients?
- Biotin – Most of the market-available eyelash growth serums have biotin in them and are usually advertised as a conditioning treatment. What is biotin? It’s a B vitamin that can help with hair health by strengthening the protein keratin. I personnaly love it and take it as a supplement that is really effective. My current biotin brand is HERE on amazon.
- Peptides – This ingredient is similar to prostaglandin in that it can help generate hair growth at the hair follicle.
- Botanical Extracts – They can increase the blood circulation around the eyelash follicles and give them the nutrients that will lead to growth.
Now that things are a little clearer for you let’s dive in.
How Long Before You Get Results with eyelash serums?

The key to using eyelash serums is to be patient, as many of them can take up to three / four months before any notable difference in eyelash growth.
For faster results, you have to be consistent and must continually use the serum on your eyelashes (be sure they are clean first).
If you notice any of the above side effects happening, stop using the serum and reach out to a dermatologist.
How did we conduct our informal testing?
We researched and trialed 16 serums, some of which contained PG analogues.
We compared the results given by each serum to those given by Latisse and other popular formulas on the market.
Each reviewer got a 4-month supply of serum, and we also considered ingredients, formula, and price when making our recommendations.
The results are subjective because different people used different serums, but we came up with our top four recommendations. We also determined one serum to avoid.
Of course, keep in mind these results don’t mean you will get the same but they will point you in the ridght direction.
What is the Best Eyelash Growth Serum?

Everybody wants to use the best products on the market, especially for their skin.
It’s no different for the eyes.
If you want real growth, you don’t want those products that claim to give long lashes but really give you minuscule results.
While you may be a little wary that finding such products would be impossible, they’re not.
From our testing, there are actually four market-available eyelash serums that really delivers.
Of course, Latisse is the reference when it comes to eyelash growth serums, but it is only by prescription, it costs a fortune and has a few side effects that could be serious. (keep in mind Latisse is also not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women)
LATISSE by Allergan : the reference

This Latisse serum by Allergan is one of the most common names in the eyelash growth serum.
However, you can only get it by prescription.
It’s also quite expensive and can produce serious side effects.
Latisse’s active ingredient is bimatoprost (at 0.03%) and is quite effective in boosting eyelash growth. It can definitely cause long, thick and dense eyelashes. It’s approved by the FDA and works in about 80% of people who choose to use it.
The biggest drawback to using Latisse, however, is the cost. It’s a small bottle that will cost you $125. Plus, add that to the cost of a doctor’s visit because it is only available by prescription.
If cost is a downside for you, or you want to avoid the side effects, then any of the market-available alternatives will do the job such as the ones below.
They can also generate the kind of eyelash growth you’d want for much less than you’d get with Latisse.
Top 1 Eyelash growth serum : RevitaLash Serum
RevitaLash is clearly the closest to Latisse among the over the counter products and can be easily found in the retail market. You can find HERE on amazon.
It uses a next-to-impossible-to-say ingredient – Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide – that its manufacturer Athena Cosmetics has created. It’s a synthetic ingredient that Athena Cosmetics designed.
What makes RevitaLash so worthwhile?
It’s loaded with healthy ingredients that can increase your lashes. For example, it contains Panax, a ginseng root extract, biotin and peptides. Of course, the prostaglandin ( the Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide) ingredient will definitely boost your eyelash growth.
Every one of these ingredients can cause the following:
- Prostaglandin – growth
- Botanical Extracts (green tea, ginseng, saw palmetto and Japanese felwort) – stimulation
- Calendula Flower – soothing
- Biotin – growth and nutrition
- Wheat protein – conditioning
RevitaLash Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide, Biotin, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Swertia Japonica Extract, Biotinoyl Tripeptide 1, Octapeptide 2, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Protein, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenisen, Glycerin, Cellulose Gum, Butylene Glycol, Phosphoric Acid, Disodium Phosphate, Pentylene Glycol
After 4 months of consistent use, we got really great results, a bit similar to those with latisse. The good thing is you don’t need a prescription for it, and the results are very comparable to those with Latisse.
You can find HERE on amazon.
It is true that RevitaLash is still costly, ( almost as expensive as Latisse) but that’s because of the prostaglandin ingredient in it. Yous should probably try the cheaper alternatives before as they could give you results that would also make you happy 🙂
The following serum surprised us by the results we got even though it does not have any PG
Top 2 Eyelash Serum : Lusros Eyelash Serum
When it comes to Lusros Eyelash Growth Serum, you’ll be surprised to know that it offers incredible results at an affordable price and contains no prostaglandin in it. That was a huge surprise for us.
We found it HERE on amazon.
One would naturally assume that only prostaglandin products would work, but it appears even those eyelash serums without any of them in them can work as well. (thanks to the blend of the other ingredients)
Yes, Lusros Eyelash Growth Serum is one of the most surprising non-prostaglandin eyelash serrum on the market that still works as if it has prostaglandin in it. Or at least can kinca compete with it.
Why is that, though? It’s because it contains other growth-enhancing ingredients such as botanical extracts, peptides, amino acids, biotin and panthenol. Maybe it also has to do with the dosage.
So, the Lusros Eyelash Growth Serum is a handful of great active ingreddients such as Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, a proprietary botanically-derived compound that will kick start the keratin genes into action. According to clinical trials, there is a 25% increase in lash length when serums use this peptide.
However, the serum must be used every day to ensure results, as real results were noticed around the third month.
Patience is the key to seeing results from eyelash growth serums, so don’t go into it thinking you’ll see immediate results.
With this serum, you will experience longer, thicker eyelashes. Of course, there is no doubt that using Latisse would be better, but when it comes to over-the-counter products, the Lusros Eyelash Growth Serum is really worth trying.
Yes this serum is quite affordable. For example, for 5ml, you’ll pay about $39. With the Latisse, you’ll pay $190 for the same amount.
Why would you not do it if you could get nearly the same results with this over-the-counter option for less?
A comparison between Revitalash and Lusros shows that Lusros isn’t as great as a product as Revitalash, but without prostaglandin in it, it does a fairly good job.
As you know, the cost is $39 for 5ml; Revitlash runs $98 for a 2ml bottle. Nobody wants to waste their money on products that do not work. When it comes to eyelash serums, you have to use them regularly to ensure the results stay. If money is an issue, then it’s obvious to go with a lower-cost, just-as-effective product. We found it HERE on amazon.
If money is not an obstacle for you, Revitalash will do well for you.
Ingredients: Deionized Water, Lactobacillus, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Propanediol, Polysorbate 80, Xanthan Gum, Bacillus Ferment, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Wheat Amino Acids, Soy Amino Acids, Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Citrate, Panthenol, Arginine HCI, Serine, Threonine, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, lodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Biotinoyl Tripeptide- 1
The lusros serum is a compromise between three things:
- Safety
- Cost
- Effectiveness
Are there any negative aspects to using this product?
Since it contains no prostaglandin ingredients, it’ll take more time to get the results you want. The key is to be patient when using it. With Revitalash, you get a 2ml bottle, whereas you get a 5ml bottle with this product – a good-sized bottle that can last nearly four months.
Top 3 Eyelash serum : VieBeauti Eyelash Serum
One of the newest eyelash serums on the market is the VieBeauti Eyelash Growth Serum.
Still, it’s becoming popular with those individuals who are looking for longer, more robust and thicker eyelashes. You can find it HERE on amazon.
This is a more simple formula than lusros serum.
It’s loaded with amino acids, which are protein building blocks to help boost your eyelashes. It also contains several botanical extracts that can help increase blood circulation and peptides that can stimulate eyelash growth.
The results are relatively good, maybe not as good as you’d get with the Lusros serum, but there is stil a notable difference within four months if you compare your lashes before and after treatment.
This eyelash serum is also quite affordable but a bit more expensive that lusros.
It’s about $30 for a 3ml bottle of Viebeauti serum. Luxros costs $39 for a 5ml bottle. If we compare the cost per, mL, it’s about $10 per mL for the 3ml bottle, whereas the Luxros serum costs $8 per mil for a 5ml bottle.
Viebeauty eyelash serum ingredients:
Purified water, Alanine, isoleucine, arginine, glutamic acid, serine, valine, lysine, threonine, aspartic acid, histidine, Butanediol, POLYGONUM MULTIFLORUM extract. NYMPHAEA COERULEA Flower extract, PANAX GINSENG root extract, Hydrolyzed silk, oligopeptide 1
The drawback?
One of the reasons I think that Vibeauti doesn’t work as well as lusros serum is the absence of biotin. Biotin is well-known as an ingredient that can promote eyelash growth. Still, it’s a rather good serum that offers good results. You can find it HERE on amazon.
Top 4 Eyelash serum : Rapidlash Eyelash Growth Serum
If you are interested in increasing your lashes, you probably have looked at the different available serums on the market.
In most cases, you certainly have heard about RapidLash. ( you can find it HERE on amazon)
There is a reason for that. It’s been around for many years and still has a strong following of consumers. RapidLash can now be used even by people with light-colored eyes.
Because we heard the FDA may have recently cracked down on RapidLash’s use of the active ingredient isopropyl closprostenate. This ingredient had the ability to produce results similar to Latisse at much less than what you’d pay for Latisse. However, the ingredient may be considered a prostaglandin that could lead to darkening irises and eyelid skin.
Removing this prostaglandin has brought on a few complaints that it’s not as worthwhile as it used to be.
But, it’s been reformulated to include a ton of peptides, such as Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Pumpkin Seed Extract and Panthenol Biotin. Each one of these ingredients is known to help stimulate eyelash growth and thickness.
Does it really measure up compared to other eyelash serums on the market?
Users have said that it causes little to no irritation and, within 4 months, causes eyelashes to become thicker and longer. We found it less effective than lusros and viebeauty. I think it has to do with the concentration of the active ingredients.
Rapidlash ingredients :
Water (Aqua), Butylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Octopeptide-2, Copper Tripeptide-1, sh-Polypeptide-1, Curcubita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Rhizobian Gum, Biotin, Dicalcium Phosphate, Panthenol, Pantethine, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin, Sea Water, Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Disodium Phosphate, Sodium Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Chlorphenesin, Sorbic Acid, Sodium Oleate, Potassium Sorbate.
Are there any negative aspects to using this product as opposed to any other listed eyelash serums? First off, it’s a tad bit more expensive; not as much as the cost is $34 for a 3ml bottle. Viebeauti serum is available in a 3ml bottle for $28.
Rapidlash isn’t as good as it was previously, as the current formula contains no prostaglandin in it. However, it still has some eyelash growth ingredients that can help give your eyelashes a little boost :)( you can find it HERE on amazon)
Eyelash serum to avoid : NutraLuxe Lash MD
We do not recommend NutraLuxe Lash MD.
Read on to understand why. ( you can find it HERE on amazon.)
The products contain many eyelash growth ingredients, such as vitamins A, B3, B5, C and E, peptides, botanical extracts and even Prostaglandin I.C.
While it can give users the long, thick eyelashes they want, it is known to be a not-so-serious irritant. Yes, in fact the results are not the issue, we got good results with it but other reasons exist to avoid it.
NutraLuxe Lash MD Ingredients:
Aqua, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Lactate, Sodium Pca, Sorbitol, Isopropyl Cloprostenate, Proline, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi Leaf Extract, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben.
Why we don’t recommend it:
- Its formula does not include biotin, which is the primary ingredient for eyelash growth. Biotin can offer real results, but this formula does not have it.
- It’s expensive, costing consumers $50 for a 1.5ml bottle.
- And it contains parabens, all four types of them. Parabens as a cosmetic preservative are not a good thing. Parabens have been scientifically shown to cause hormone disruption, decrease fertility, damage reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes and raise cancer risk. On top of that, it can cause irritation to the skin.
While some people are fine with ignoring the possible outcomes of paraben-containing beauty products, it’s better to avoid them altogether.
We definitely think you should avoid using the NutraLuxe Lash MD product for your eyelash growth serum and find another product that will do the same thing without using parabens as an ingredient.
( you can find it HERE on amazon if you want to have a look at it)
Commonly Asked Questions About Lash Growth Serums
Can Eyelash Serums Be Used In Conjunction With Extensions?
The majority of serums do not have any oils in them that will affect the lash extension glue. Thus, eyelash serums can be used with lash extensions if you want.
Are Eye Problems Common With Eyelash Serums?
There are some individuals who will experience eye problems, like itchy, red or dry eyes, when using serums. It’s also not uncommon to have eye and eyelid swelling as a side effect. These are the common side effects, but the most severe side effect of eyelash serum is iris darkening, which is noted with prostaglandin products.
Each side effect is rare. As long as you follow the directions as laid out and don’t drip the product into your eyes, you should be fine.
How Safe Are Lash Serums?
If you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use lash serums, they are pretty safe. Make sure that the serum is applied once or twice a day to clean lashes only. Never use contacts while you apply the lash serum.
Will Your Lashes Fall Out When You Quit Using The Serum?
When stop using the serum, your eyelashes do not fall out. Instead, they slowly go back to their pre-treatment size. There are situations where some eyelash loss will occur when using a serum product. That’s because the weaker eyelashes are being pushed out to make way for more robust, thicker eyelashes to come in. This is what serums are designed to do. It causes the stimulation of the hair growth cycle and pushes the weaker hairs out to bring in the stronger ones.
