How to: nail polish jewelry

OPI – Show it and Glow it! and OPI – Teenage Dream

Right! I’m ready! Hopefully this will help all of you out there wondering how to make nail polish jewelry.

I’m not gonna beat around the bush, so here’s what you need:

Cabochons. These come in various sizes and shapes and they should be flat on one side and embossed on the other. The higher the glass is, the more awesome your piece of jewelry will look.

Pendant base/mount. These also come in various sizes and shapes. Earrings, necklaces; you name it.

You have to make sure that they actually fit each other. If they don’t then, well.. that’s pretty obvious isn’t it. The ones I have in the images are 13x18mm.

You’ll also need a burnisher and a rocker bezel (I won’t talk about these, but I’m linking to a video further down in this post so you’ll see it there).

So, here’s what you do.

Chose the nail polish you’d like to use. For this example, I decided that I’d like to make a white one with a bit of zing, so I chose to use White Out and White Cap, both from China Glaze.

You start off by putting your base color, White Out for me for instance, inside your base pendant.

You want it to be even and nice, just like on your nails. So you decide if you want several thin coats or just one fat coat. Either way, you have to let that sit and dry completely.

If you have a glitter polish you want to layer with, you put that on the FLAT side of your cabochon. If you just have one color that you’re using, then you put that color on the flat side of your cabochon as well. So, for example,  if I were to make a purely yellow one without any glitter, then I’d put the yellow polish inside the pendant base and on the back side of the cabochon (scroll down for an example). Both items get nail polish on them.

After both of them have dried off, you put the cabochon in and you set it like you see in this video here. You could also add a bit of jewelry glue for extra hold.

NB. Some pendants are hard metal, for those you can just use strong glue. If you have silver pendants then rocker and bezel is the way to go.

Here it is finished.

It’s crazy shiny in the sun. I love it!

Two random ones:

If you don’t wait until it’s completely dry before putting in your cabochon, you’ll have it come up on the sides, like the image below. That was one of the ways I tried to do it before I figured it out. Even tho you want to make it and use it straight away; you’ll need some patience.

All you have to do now is set your imagination free and come up with cool designs!

So this is a somewhat screw-you to all the bloggers out there keeping this a secret. Hope you’ll all go and make your own jewelry now – I sure will! :-)

    • I got mine from a store on Etsy called happysupplies. The items were good, but it took a long time for it to come, so I might look for someone else next time. But she has a lot of different cabochons and stuff, so it’s very easy to get different items from her.

      Good luck!

  3. Thanks to you I’ve started to make some :)
I prefer to paint only on the cabochon, coat after coat, but both results are good, I think I’m just less patient than you :D
Oh, and thanks for mentionning Happy Supplies, I bought my findings from them and I’m so happy of them ! ^^

  20. How do you bezel-set these like the ones in the video with these having the decorative edge? Wouldn’t you ruin the texture?
